SUMMARY:May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Wandsworth Society’s Arts Fringe Meeting.\nMUSIC FOR MINDS \nThis Society event\, which is also part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival\, will be led by the Music Director and Accompanist from Wigmore Hall’s “Singing with Friends” initiative for people living with dementia and their families. It was launched in 2017 in partnership with Resonate Arts. The participants come to the Wigmore Hall for weekly sessions to engage in choral singing and discover how much musical activity can enhance their lives. \nWe invite you to participate in a workshop with the Wigmore professionals to experience that enrichment. Come along to learn\, enjoy and join in the singing (no musical skills required!) or just to listen – it will be fun! During the evening a representative of the branch of the Alzheimer’s Society for Wandsworth will also describe the work it does in the borough\, including the use of music\, and discuss the latest research outcomes. \n  \n

SUMMARY:February Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Love your Common.\nThursday 14 February\, 7.45pm for 8pm \nAn illustrated talk and discussion with Julia Bott and Richard Fox\, Co-Chairs\, The Friends of Wandsworth Common (FOWC). \nWandsworth Common is the largest green open space in the Society’s area. The Friends group\, launched last May\, now has almost 300 members. And the Common is of course enjoyed by many more – of all ages\, for all sorts of recreation\, walking\, bird-watching\, dog-walking\, sports\, cycling\, relaxing\, meditating…… \nWhat is the Friends’ vision for the Common? How will they achieve it\, working with the Council and the Common’s management company\, in tandem with the’MAC’ (Management Advisory Committee) and the Wandsworth Society? \n2019 will be a significant year in the Common’s long history – the first public tender for a contractor to manage the Common who will then work to a new management and maintenance plan\, now due out in March (following earlier public consultation). We expect a lively discussion about the Common’s future!

SUMMARY:Capability Brown’s Landscape in Wimbledon Park: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Dr Dave Dawson – the Society’s contribution to the Wandsworth Heritage Festival 2018 – for which this year’s theme is the borough’s parks and open spaces. Naturescope on Wandsworth Common sits alongside the Skylark Café. It can be approached from either Dorlcote Road (parking available in the vicinity) or from John Archer Way. If weather is good\, there is the opportunity for a pleasant walk across the Common\, and refreshments will be served outdoors from 7.45pm. \nWimbledon Park is included on English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The park was transformed in the 18th century by the English landscape architect Capability Brown and the lake was formed as a focal point for the house located to the south of the present park. \nPlease note this will take place in Naturescope on Wandsworth Common
