Wandsworth’s Green Ambition
The Borough of Wandsworth has set itself the target of becoming inner-London’s greenest inner borough, going carbon neutral by 2030 and being a zero-emission council by 2050.
Opposition to Heathrow expansion, reducing waste, encouraging recycling, tree planting and making council buildings more efficient are cited as examples of the Council’s actions.
Other environmental initiatives have included switching to LED street lighting, promoting electric vehicles and introducing a huge number of electric charging points around the borough, as well as encouraging residents to join car clubs, with Wandsworth now boasting the highest membership in London.
Talk on the National Park City movement
On 24 Julythe Friends of Wandsworth Common is hosting Daniel Raven-Ellison, founder of the National Park City movement, for a talk on ‘Wild Cities’. Dan – a National Geographic explorer and self-styled guerilla geographer – has been the driving force in London’s being declared the world’s first ever National Park City. He is an inspirational speaker with a passion for ‘rewilding’, encouraging biodiversity and re-engaging with nature.
