September Meeting: Cleaner Air for Wandsworth

As the Wandsworth Society's contribution to the Wandle Fortnight the Society is organising a stroll to look at different views of the Wandle and the Thames, including a designated vista of the mouth of the Wandle. Meet by the Crane pub, at the beginning of The Causeway and finish at Putney Bridge Station (with frequent 220 and 270 buses back to Garratt Lane).  No booking necessary.

The Society has  a private guided booked a private visit for members and their friends to Ernö Goldfinger's 1930's Modernist home in Hampstead. The house, completed in 1939, forged a new pathway for modern design. The house is a compact domestic dwelling and can take only 12 visitors at a time which makes for an interesting one hour interactive tour. Our tour is for 11am and places are strictly limited. The house is 5 minutes from Hampstead Heath Overground Station…

Simon Winder, Wandsworth resident, part-time historian and part-time publisher, will talk about his latest book Lotharingia, A Personal History of Europe's Lost Country . Two talks to the Society on his earlier works were much enjoyed for their wit and style. As one reviewer has written about his latest book, 'He is a master of the art of making history both funny and fun, with never any loss of seriousness. Once again he brings Germany bouncing back to life.'

March Meeting – The Huguenots in Wandsworth

A speaker from the Huguenot Society will give a talk on who the Huguenots were, why they came, their persecution, emigration and assimilation. This will relate to those who lived in Wandsworth, the skills they brought and the way that Wandsworth's heavily industrialised past is reflected in today's town. .

The Putney Society is organising this meeting and is very kindly inviting anyone interested to come. As you may know, or as you will know if you attended our meeting 12 September Cleaner Air for Wandsworth, an excellent talk by Leonie Cooper,  the ULEZ is to be extended in 2021 from the London Congestion Zone to the South  Circular Road. Speakers have been invited from Transport for London, Wandsworth Council and an independent air pollution expert.

A presentation and discussion, led by a panel of Society 'experts'. Members of the audience will be invited to give their own suggestions about 'successes' and 'failures'. The meeting is also likely to cover 'trends' over the last fifty years (almost!) of the Society's existence, in planning policies (national and local) and consultation arrangements with local communities…
